| 15:10 - Friday, May 9, 2008 | About Us...The
Bonaire WebCams project is the brain child of Dan Senie and Jake Richter, who,
in 1999 decided that it would be a cool demonstration of their technical know-how
to implement the world's first underwater reef camera for viewing via the Internet.
Since Jake lives on Bonaire, in a house overlooking the ocean, the location
of this ReefCam was something of a no-brainer. More details on how the project
evolved can be found in our Project History.
In
March of 2000, Dan & Jake, via their U.S. corporations, founded Caribbean
WebCams, LLC in Norfolk, Virginia in order to provide a vehicle for implementing
the Bonaire WebCams project as well as offer their services to companies which
are interested in integrating a WebCam solution with their tourism offerings,
in particular dive resorts and tourism destinations in the Caribbean. This
site, Bonaire WebCams, is the proof of concept for the Caribbean WebCams, LLC
vision, which combines technical knowledge of camera systems, networking, and
the Internet with customized software to provide a complete tropical WebCam
solution which will keep people coming back to client Web sites. As an example,
during just the Bonaire WebCams beta-test period, which ran from late March
to mid-August 2000, weekday visitation rates typically exceeded 1,000 visitors,
with over 1.2 million hits per month.
With
the launch of the official site on August 24, 2000, visitation went up over 250%
and seems to have been staying there, at around 2500 visitors a day. To handle
such a large volume of visitors, Caribbean WebCams hosts the Bonaire WebCam site
on a dedicated server located at a facility in Waltham, Massachusetts in the
U.S. where a direct 100Mbit network tap ties into an Internet backbone connection
at the facility.
In June
2004, the WebCams were moved to a new location on Bonaire - the Eden Beach Resort,
courtesy of a number of Bonaire WebCams
sponsors.
